Educational Field Trip to the Ayvalık–Cunda Region Conducted with Recreation Management Students
On 22 November 2025, students of the Department of Recreation Management participated in an educational field trip to the Ayvalık–Cunda region under the supervision of Department Chair Prof. Dr. Barış Erdem, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Musa Oflaz, and Res. Asst. Emrah İnaltekin. The program was designed to present the region’s cultural heritage, creative industries, and diversity of recreational consumption through on-site observation.
Within the scope of the trip, historical buildings, libraries, and traditional venues reflecting the cultural texture of the region were visited. During these visits, evaluations were made on how spatial identity enriches the recreational experience, how environments that support social interaction influence individuals’ emotional bonds with destinations, and how cultural elements integrate to form distinctive recreational spaces.
Several local entrepreneurial stories in the region provided valuable learning opportunities for students. In particular, the experiences of local entrepreneurs who established their own businesses by progressing from entry-level positions served as strong examples in terms of continuity in recreational service delivery, reminder-based services, guest relations, and the importance of creating a unique organizational culture.
At the visited accommodation facilities, emphasis was placed on cleanliness, sincerity, guest communication, and especially the reasons why international visitors prefer the region for recreational purposes. Discussions were held on how the service approach and perceived quality of these facilities contribute to the overall destination image.
Students also examined activities related to the region’s handcrafted production tradition. Beyond ceramics, the sourcing of various materials from different countries and their transformation through craftsmanship provided an important example of the sustainability of recreational handicraft experiences. In addition, participatory practices such as “do-it-yourself” and “cook-it-yourself” were observed to enhance individuals’ active involvement in the process and increase enjoyment of the experience.
At dessert production points and pastry workshops, which hold a significant place in touristic demand, the relationship between specialization beyond product diversity, original production approaches, and the need for qualified human resources and recreational experience delivery was examined. In these businesses, critical elements for recreation management—such as customer communication, empathy skills, and visitor loyalty—were closely observed in practice.
Efforts aimed at preserving the region’s culturally based destination image provided students with an important perspective on destination management. Evaluations were made regarding the importance of protecting cultural identity by local stakeholders and how this influences recreational preferences.
In the final part of the program, a local production facility was visited, where students examined the processing stages of olive and similar products, the classification of different product types, and the operational structure of production areas. Through these observations, students had the opportunity to evaluate the recreational experience potential of agricultural production and the impact of visitor-oriented narratives on destination preferences.
This comprehensive field trip enabled students to assess the field of recreation not only theoretically but also through on-site observation from a multidimensional perspective, highlighting the diversity, cultural depth, and importance of recreational experiences in the region within the context of sustainable tourism.
